I created this pattern while playing around with baby hats for a charity knit. Enjoy!Materials:
Brown worsted-weight yarn
Small amount of orange worsted-weight yarn
Size 9 circular and double-pointed needles
Seed Stitch Pattern:
Round 1 – K1, P1 (repeat until end of round.)
Round 2 – P1, K1 (repeat until end of round.)
In flat knitting K1, P1 repeat on both sides.
Directions for Hat:
Using brown, cast on 72 stitches with the circular needles. Join, being careful not to twist, and place marker at beginning of round. Work in seed stitch for 6 rounds. Then work in stockinette (knit every stitch) until piece measures 4.5 to 5 inches. Switch to double-pointed needles.

Dec round 1: [K6, K2tog]*
Dec round 2: [K5, K2tog]*
Dec round 3: [K4, K2tog]*
Dec round 4: [K3, K2tog]*
Dec round 5: [K2, K2tog}*
Dec round 6: [K1, K2tog]*
Dec next rounds: [K2tog]* until there are 7 stitches left. Pull yarn through remaining stitches, pull to close, insert through center of hat and weave in on underside.
Ears:
Leaving at least a 12 inch tail, pick up 10 stitches along one top side of hat. Working in seed stitch:
Row 1: Two sts brown, 6 sts orange, then poke brown yarn tail through to use for next 2 sts like intarsia. Thrifty, huh?
Row 2: Two sts brown, 6 sts orange, 2 sts brown
Row 3: Two sts brown, in orange K1, P2tog, K2tog, P1, then 2 sts brown.
Row 4: Two sts brown, in orange K2tog, P2tog, then 2 sts brown
Rows 5 & 6: All brown sts.
Row 7: Bind off knitting 2tog at each end. Weave in all ends, covering any holes or mis-colored areas as you go and pulling yarn to the underside of hat.
Repeat for the second ear. Turn hat inside out and weave in any extra yarn. You can just tie the orange tails in a knot and snip.

A rough gauge would be helpful here!
Well, it has been a few years since I wrote this freebie pattern, but gauge isn't super important since I think the hat was designed to fit a 6 month old. If you end up with a smaller gauge, it will fit a smaller baby... if bigger than it will fit an older one. If you've knit other baby hats then you should have an idea of what size needle you usually use and how many stitches you usually cast on.
A friend of mine wanted me to make he son a bear hat and I stumbled across your blog via Ravelry! If she likes the pattern I shall be knitting it.
